Family mediation: Theories and methods

El Rhali Aharchaou

Abstract

It is difficult to decide about the future of family mediation and its upcoming development, how it will grow in its forms and practices, or it will remain at its weak level, in which it is only a secondary procedure? It is also difficult to predict the nature of the future relationships between family mediation and divorce in its traditional judicial meaning. Through the evocation of some facts related to these challenges, we will try in this paper on “Family mediation: theoretical characteristics and methodological techniques”, to present a synthetic summary of the cicumstances of the emergence of this practice in the field of the settlement of family conflicts and its theoretical, philosophical and moral characteristics. We will emphasise also in its most important definitions, objectives and models, as well as the precise description of its main methodological choices and the factors of its use as a mechanism to structure family relationships. We will conclude this paper by presenting the main criticisms of mediation and indicating its future prospects. Keywords: Family mediation; Mediator; Mediation techniques; places of mediation

A standardized scale of loneliness in Algerian society

Bashir Maamri

Abstract

The aim of the research was to normalize the scale of psychological loneliness on the Algerian environment. The total sample consisted of 454 individuals, of which 208 were males and 246 females, their age range from 15 to 50 years, with an average of 23.55 for males and 21.01 for females. For validity, we calculated the validity of the distinction, the validity of agreement and the validity of the conflict. We evaluated stability by re-application and the Alpha Kronbach method. It was found that the scale was characterized by good psychometric properties and was suitable for use as a measuring instrument in the Algerian environment. Level of metacognitive processes among a sample of Kuwaiti gifted students with regard to gender and study branch

Emad A. Alzeghoul & Huda S. AL-Hindal

Abstract

This study aimed at detecting the level of meta-cognitive processes among a sample of Kuwaiti gifted students, and exploring the differences on it due to gender and study branch. The sample consisted of (294) eleventh grade students, (149) females, (145) males. There were (228) students in science branch, and (66) students in letters branch. All study members responded to the study instrument, and the results indicated that the level of meta-cognitive processes was high with one standard deviation above the hypothetical mean for the whole instrument and for its dimensions (planning, controlling & evaluation). The results also indicated that no significant differences were found in these processes due to gender & study branch. The results were discussed and recommendations were addressed accordingly. The academic reality of the university student: field study

Ahmed Fellouh

Abstract

The study aimed at uncovering the academic reality of the university student from the students point of view. To achieve the objectives of the study, a questionnaire was prepared containing 38 phrases related to five dimensions: student dimension, dimension of programs and methods, teachers dimension, academic climate dimension and administration dimension. The questionnaire was distributed to a sample of 80 psychology students belonging to the institute of humanities and social science in the University Center of Relizane. The results demonstrated that there is a middle degree of the academic reality and an acceptable degree of oneself and programs. There is a middle degree of teacher and a low degree of the prevailing academic climate and the administration. There were no statistically significant differences between males and females in their view of the academic reality of the university student. Data show statistically significant difference due to the effect of specialization on the student’s view of the academic reality of the university student. Malika Kouidri Bachaoui & Mansour Bouksara

Abstract

Organic disease is not the only source of suffering in patients, we find also the psychic effect of illness which consist in anxiety, stress and social handicap. Those troubles induce patient to build a self-image and a doctor’s image that are different from those that he has before illness. This study aimed to construct a valid scale to measure self-image and Other’s Image in the therapeutic Relationship. We collected data from a sample that consisted of 445 patients (271 men and 174 women) whose ages range between 17 and 80 with an average age of 36.61 years. Results show positive correlations between self-esteem and self-image in the therapeutic relationship and Other’s Image in the therapeutic relationship, and between self-image and Other’s Image in the therapeutic relationship. The parallel analysis based on Factor v 2.12.1 demonstrated that the scale of self-image and Other’s Image in the therapeutic relationships enjoys high reliability and validity. Infantil autism A review of its basic forms its clinical characteristics and caregiving methods in western societies and in Algerian society

Mohamed Benabdellah

Abstract

This study aimed to shed light on the evolution of the researchers’ view of autism by following their use of the various terms of autism. We intended also to uncover their differences which are pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) listed in the anglo-saxon classifications (DSM), the International Classification of diseases (ICD) and the French Classification (CFTMEA). Then we will examine the most important clinical characteristics of developmental disorders and the types of autistic spectrum disorder such as childhood autism, asperger’s syndrome, Rett Syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and atypical autism. The study then attempted to pay attention to the most important approaches adopted by psychopathologists in an attempt to identify the symptoms of autism. Thereafter, we described the most used Behavioral, developmental and institutional treatments currently adopted in Western societies in general and in Algerian society in particular. The effect of working memory capacity on word recognition speed in Arabic second grade readers

Mohammed El-Mir

Abstract

The current study examined the effect of working memory capacity (WMC) on word recognition speed (WRS) in Arabic second grade readers. We start from the hypothesis that WRS performance depends on WMC. Two groups of good and poor readers were tested on measures of WMC and WRS.The results show that high working memory (WM) span readers are more rapid in word recognition (WR) than low WM span readers. We found also high correlations between WMC and WRS, which means that WMC can be a good predictor of word recognition ability in Arabic orthography. Keywords: Word recognition speed; working memory capacity; Arabic orthography

Flourishing: Re-validity Structure for Egyptian Adults

Marei Salama-Younes & Walid A. Massoud

Abstract

In Egypt, few studies are interested in studying well-being and/or flourishing for different samples, more specifically for adults (Salama-Younes, 2017; Salama-Younes & Hashim, 2017). In order to compare the different samples, the specific goals of the present research are to (i) re-test the validity and reliability of 2 scales measuring the flourishing state, and (ii) explore the effect of gender on both assessments for Egyptian adults. For that, the Arabic version of both the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) and the Flourishing Scale (FS) were used with an adult sample (n = 333). The 2 scales showed good structure validity, reliability, and gender has an effect on only the Flourishing Scale. Keywords: Egyptian Adults; Well-being; Flourishing; Validity; Reliability

Constructing An Arabic Language Version of the Stress Overload Scale (SOS).

Luma E. Bashmi & James H. Amirkhan

Abstract

Arabic-speaking populations suffer from unique stressors including but not limited to acculturation, making it more crucial than ever to have a validated tool to measure stress in this population. The Stress Overload Scale (SOS), which measures stress perceived as overwhelming relative to one’s resources, has proven effective in predicting illness in English-speaking populations; but no Arabic version of the 30-item SOS yet exists. The current study aimed to construct an Arabic SOS, and determine if it maintains its validity in native Arabic speakers in the United States. The 30-item SOS was translated into Arabic using the Cross-Cultural Adaptation method, including back translation. The sample consisted of 90 native Arabic speakers, aged 18 years and over from a large public university, who completed the measures online. The Arabic SOS demonstrated construct and criterion validity by showing significant positive correlations with the Arabic Perceived Stress Scale and the Patient-Health Questionnaire-15, respectively. Limitations of this study and suggestions for future validation in different Arabic-speaking samples and settings are discussed. It is concluded that the Arabic SOS may offer a better tool for evaluating pathogenic stress in Arabic-speaking populations than current existing measures.
