Ahmed M. Abdel-Khalek, Mohammed El-Mir & Abdellah El Idrissi

Abstract

The Arabic research project entitled “Happiness rate and its relation to well-being (WB) and religiosity” was carried out on samples of university students from 14 Arab countries. The aim of this project was to explore happiness rate and its relation to WB variables (rating scales of physical health, mental health, happiness, and satisfaction) as well as religiosity. The present study recruited a sample of male (n = 156) and female (n = 234) university students from Morocco. Results indicated the mediocre rate of happiness of the present sample within the other Arab countries. There were no sex-related differences except on the self-rating scale of mental health in favor of men. All the Pearson correlation coefficients between the study scales were statistically significant and positive in both sexes. Principal components analysis disclosed a high-loaded component and labeled “Well-being and religiosity”. It was concluded that those who consider themselves as happy and in good physical and mental health were more religious. Clinicians may use this finding in counseling and psychotherapy. Keywords: happiness; well-being; health; religiosity; Morocco

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate rates of happiness and it’s associations with well-being and religiosity among a sample of Palestinian college students (N = 385). They responded to the Arabic Scale of Happiness (ASH), well-being rating scales of physical health, mental health, happiness, and satisfaction with life, as well as religiosity. Results indicated that men obtained statistically significant higher mean scores on happiness and mental health than did their female counterparts. Women obtained a significantly higher mean score on religiosity than did their male peers. All the Pearson correlation coefficients, except two, were statistically significant and positive between the study scales. A principal component analysis retained two factors in men and labeled “Well-being and mental health”, and “Religiosity and physical health”. Among women, one factor was extracted and labeled” Well – being and religiosity”. Based on the responses of the present sample, it was concluded that persons consider themselves as happy are more religious, particularly women. Standardization of the resilience scale in theAlgerian society

Bashir Maamria

Abstract

Since the 1980s and 1990s, the psychological research on stress has begun to focus on the positive aspects of personality related to mental health, and examined the factors that help individuals to cope with the different situations they face in their everyday life. Then appears the term “mitigated” or “modulated” variables that refers to psychological and social variables, such as resilience that reduces stress when we receive shocks of life. Susan Kobasa, the first psychologist that explored resilience indicated that stress research should make a shift and focus on health rather than disease. Resilience according to Kobassa is a “general belief of the individual in his efficacy and ability to use all available psychosocial resources, so as to be able to understand, explain and face effectively the events of stressful life. She indicated also that resilience consists of three dimensions, which are: 1) Commitment: a kind of psychological contract that related the individual to his goals, values and the others around him, which makes him to look at the stressful situations as bringing pleasure. 2) Control: refers to the extent to which the individual believes that he can have control over the events and take personal responsibility for what happens to him. He considers that events are dynamic and not static. It includes the ability to make decisions, the ability to interpret events, and the ability to effectively confront stress. 3) Challenge: the individual’s belief that the change in his life is an exciting and necessary opportunity for growth rather than a threat; and represents a natural aspect of life, which helps him to take initiatives, explore the environment, and to be aware of the psychological and social sources that help him to face stress effectively. The aim of this research is to standardize resilience in the Algerian environment. The standardization sample consisted of 392 individuals; 191 males, 201 females, ranging in age from 15 to 50 years. So we measured discriminant, convergent and concurrent validity and the correlations between the these three dimensions, and the coefficients were good. We evaluated reliability by test-retest and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, and all were good. Keywords: scale; standardization; resilience; positive psychology

Mohamed Naciri & Mohammed El-Mir

Abstract

Reading is one of the main school competencies which its learning is determinant for school success; in addition to social, professional and cultural integration. However, its learning process may be hampered by many difficulties and disorders, particularly dyslexia. The characteristics of Arabic, particularly phonologico-morphological ones, that differentiated it from other languages, influence the process of learning to read in Arabic, as well as reading disorders such as dyslexia. Although dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder determined by clear symptoms, and is caused by univerasl biological origins; the phonologico-morphological characteristics could facilitate or complicate reading performance, and then deepning dyslexia disorder. The current study aimed to explore the effect of phonologico-morphological characteristics on reading and dyslexia in 20 dyslexics and 20 good readers. Theoretical currents in values building education: Analytical-critical approach

Mohammed Lahboub

Abstract

This article analyses and criticizes three theoretical currents dealing with values-building education: the traditionalist current, the modernist current and the Syncretism one. In this respect, the present article investigates their foundations. Also their values as well as their principles. It also tries to reveal their limitations and inabilities. In fact, there is no theoretical current in values building education, despite its foundations strength and its principles coherence, which has no limitations and inabilities, no matter how it responds to the challenges of educational, political and social reality. These limitations and inabilities are essentially due to the dynamic and complex nature of contemporary human societies especially their references based on pluralism, cultural diversity, and challenges of values differences. A Comparative psychosocial approach to the legends of marriageamong Maghreb’s women

Karima Allegue

Abstract

This study examined marriage myths among Maghreb’s women; specially two well-known myths in Algeria and Morocco; the myth of « Kessabah» in the region of Mostaganem in Algeria, and the myth of «Lala Aïcha Al- Bahriah» in Azmour in Morocco. The two myths become rituals of bringing luck and marriage to the spinster women or who are late in marriage. We used the comparative psychosocial approach and the content analysis in the exploration of the two marriage myths and their rituals; which permit us to compare them with each other, and determine similarities and differences between them. The results revealed the impact of the belief in resolving the delay of marriage in the Maghreb’s mentality, in addition to a great similarity between the goal of the two rituals. Although there were some simple differences. So, the rituals are social solutions invented by women to justify their spinsterhood or late marriage. The importance of practical significance styles in regulating results and conclusions of psychological and educational research

Abdelheq Behache

Abstract

This study aimed to unwrap the effect size (practical significance) as a complementary method in examining hypotheses by clarifying some statistical indicators that are used in order to indicate the value of the effect Size. It also focused on presenting the concept of effect size and its importance in covering the shortcomings of research hypotheses due to the reliance on classical statistical significance methods; as well as its role in rationalizing the results and conclusions related to research hypotheses in general. This study aimed also to compare practical significance and statistical significance methods, in order to clarify these concepts. This is for asserting the importance of each significance separately on one hand; and to encourage researchers in education and psychology to combine the concepts of statistical significance and practical significance in their future works. Relationship between schizotypy and creativity in a group of Tunisian artists

Mohamed Aymen Lahmar & Anwar Mechri

Abstract

A close relationship between psychopathology and creativity has been suggested. Our objective was to explore the relationship between schizotypy and creativity in a group of Tunisian artists. A cross sectional study was conducted on 45 artists, novelists, poets, painters, and directors (33 males and 12 females, mean age: 53.2 ± 10.2 years). Each artist took the schizotypal personality questionnaire and the seventh task of the Torrance test of creative thinking. The relationship between schizotypy and creativity was characterized by the existence of two phases: for creativity scores ≤30, there was a positive correlation between creativity and disorganized dimension of schizotypy (rs=0.39; p=0.03). Beyond this score of 30, we found a negative correlation between total scores of creativity and the negative dimension of schizotypy (rs=-0.72, p=0.008). Our results suggest the existence of a complex relationship between schizotypy and creativity. This relationship is not linear and probably obeys a “law of threshold”. However, establishing a correlation between schizotypy and creativity would better explain the relationship between mental illness and creativity. Keywords: schizotypy; creativity; artists, schizotypal personality questionnaire; Torrance test of creative thinking
